HOW TO GET TO THE TRAIL HEAD

To get to the trail head from Steamboat Springs go south on highway 40 in about three miles turn right on highway 131and head south 37 miles to the town of Toponas from there take highway 134 east 9 miles to Lynx pass road and trail head.  Alpine Taxi will provide their services from Steamboat Springs to our trail head on highway 134 at Lynx Pass.  This service is an additional fee and the responsibility of the clients, however we have enough parking space to accommodate our local clients who choose to drive to this location themselves.

TRAILS AND HUT LOCATIONS

From our trail head on highway 134 elevation (9,000 ft.) you will proceed on a groomed trail 3.5 miles to our Lynx tent hut elevation (9,122 ft).  You have the option to stay and enjoy our groomed trails in this area and spend the night in the Lynx tent.  The next day you could make the trip to our BC tent which is 6 miles on a narrow groomed trail which takes 3-5 hours.  If you feel your experience level is advanced, knowing your physical capabilities you can make our BC tent in one day from the trail head at 134 in 6-7 hours.  The groomed trail is 9.5 miles long with a gradual altitude gain of 600 ft.  Once at the BC tent hut this gives you access to many areas great for Telemark and Alpine skiing.  Get several great turns down  500 - 1000 ft. vertical with areas of steep open meadows and aspen parks down to groomed trails that provide easy travel back to the top, so you can get the most out of your day.  The trails and hut locations were constructed with all abilities in mind from the novice looking for level flat groomed trails for C-country skiing and snowshoeing to the advanced skier who wants deep powder snow, steep slopes and open back country skiing and all users will find a beautiful winter wonderland with breathtaking views along the trail of the Gore range and Flattop Mountains.

HUT ACCOMMODATIONS AND GEAR TRANSFER

The huts you will stay in are 14x16 canvas tents with wood carpeted floors, cots with thick foam pads and pillows for sleeping up to four people.  A two burner propane stove for cooking, pots, pans, plates, silverware and all cooking utensils you will need including coffee pot, towels and toilet paper.  A wood stove with a supply of split wood will be provided for quick heat and drying out clothing.  Wood is very expensive and time consuming to gather, to prevent a lot of wood consumption and also for your convenience a vented propane heat stove will provide ample heat to keep the tent warm, though we recommend you have a sleeping bag rated for at least -20 degrees below or better.  Burning wood or keeping propane heat on high setting all night would be a waste of fuel, we ask that you be conservative.  Lighting will be provided by propane lanterns.  Though there is no running water at our huts we will have plenty of fresh water jugs full for drinking, cooking, and washing.  An outhouse facility will be present at each hut.

When you arrive at the trail head your personal gear and food you have prepared for the stay will be loaded onto sleds and shuttled to the hut of your destination and waiting in your hut when you arrive.  This service keeps you from having a large heavy pack to carry on your back with food and gear all you need on your back is a day pack with your safety, emergency gear, water and food for the trip to the hut.  Remember to bring what you need, but please pack conservatively as we only have so much room on our sleds (refer to our gear check list).  If you are staying more than one night at different huts your gear will be shuttled hut to hut on days scheduled and when your trip is complete your gear will be taken back to the trail head.  If you prefer to pack in all your own gear then our self service package would be more for your liking and you would still enjoy all the great skiing and groomed trail in the area.
